Today at church our pastor told us about Fanny Crosby, a nineteenth century Christian-writer-activist who wrote thousands of hymns during her lifetime. Some of her hymns are among my favorites, including one we sang today, "Blessed Assurance."
Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.
Perfect submission, perfect delight,
Visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
Angels descending, bring from above
Echoes of mercy, whispers of love.
In addition to being a prolific writer of hymns, Fanny Crosby was also blind.
Perfect submission, all is at rest,
I in my Savior am happy and blessed,
Watching and waiting, looking above,
Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.
I did not know anything about her story until today. I love learning about people who use their gifts so productively throughout their lives. It inspires me to order my days to that end as well!
